When is the fetal heart assessed?
A detailed assessment of the fetal heart (fetal echocardiography) is usually done at 18–24 weeks (optimally at 20–22 weeks), when the heart structures are clearly visible. The heart is also partly assessed during the anatomy scan. The examination is performed by radiologist Lana Ezieshvili.
Who needs fetal echocardiography?
- a family history of congenital heart disease;
- maternal diabetes;
- an increased NT in the first trimester;
- a questionable image of the heart on the anatomy scan.
What does the scan assess?
The heart chambers, valves, great vessels and heart rhythm are assessed. This makes it possible to detect congenital heart defects at an early stage, which helps to plan further management.
