What should you know?
A loop of umbilical cord around the fetal neck is a common ultrasound finding. In most cases the cord remains functional, blood flow is not compromised and pregnancy progresses normally.
A loop may appear or disappear as the fetus moves. Its presence, even when more than one loop is seen, does not by itself determine the mode of delivery.
Common symptoms and signs
- There are usually no maternal symptoms
- Color Doppler can demonstrate the loop
- Usual fetal movement patterns remain important
- Fetal heart rate is monitored during labor as standard care
Diagnosis and the role of ultrasound
Color Doppler shows cord location and flow. Repeated scans solely to see whether the loop remains are not always useful; growth, fluid and Doppler are assessed when other indications exist.
- Single or multiple loops
- Umbilical cord blood flow
- Fetal growth and movement
- Amniotic fluid and placenta
Treatment and next steps
Without additional concerns, routine prenatal care usually continues. Delivery decisions depend on gestational age, fetal heart-rate monitoring and the overall obstetric picture.
When is urgent care needed?
- Marked reduction in fetal movement
- Leaking fluid or regular painful contractions
- Bleeding or another acute pregnancy symptom
