What is the normal fetal weight?
The estimated fetal weight (EFW) is calculated from ultrasound measurements — the size of the head, abdomen and thigh bone. The result is compared with a percentile chart, which is assessed by radiologist Lana Ezieshvili.
Approximate weight by gestational age
- 20 weeks — about 300 g;
- 28 weeks — about 1000 g;
- 32 weeks — about 1700 g;
- 36 weeks — about 2600 g;
- 40 weeks — about 3300–3500 g.
These are average values; each fetus is individual.
What does lagging or exceeding mean?
A range of the 10th to 90th percentile is considered normal. Below the 10th may indicate growth restriction (SGA), while above the 90th may indicate a large fetus (LGA). Both cases require additional assessment, which Lana Ezieshvili provides.
Conclusion
Fetal weight is assessed by percentiles and over time. For an accurate assessment, book a visit with radiologist Lana Ezieshvili.
